Credible information reaching Ghanaxtra.com is that the University of Ghana has cleared Professor Ransford Gyampo of allegations of sex for grade.
The
committee charged to look into the allegations of sex for grade against
Professor Ransford by the University following a documentary by the BBC
Africa Eye did not find him culpable of the allegations.
Prof Gyampo, who is the Head of European Studies at the university, in
the video by the BBC proposed marriage to a “student” who was seeking
academic favours.
In excerpts of the video released on BBC Somalia’s Facebook page,
Professor Gyampo persuaded the reporter to meet him at the mall where he
was caught on camera making “numerous [alleged] inappropriate demands.”
In the report, he also allegedly requested to kiss the reporter.
Prof. Gyampo in a reaction in a radio interview with Accra-based Citi FM
rubbished the documentary and threatened to initiate legal action
against the BBC.
“You’ve also seen the video, have
you seen anything called sex for grades [in the video]. How can you
engage in so-called sex for grade relationship with somebody who is not a
student in the first place.”
Consequently, the University of Ghana constituted a five-member
fact-finding committee chaired by Justice (retd) Vida Akoto-Ampofo, to
look into allegations of sexual harassment against the professor.
The committee after almost two months of work submitted its report to
the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro-Owusu on Tuesday.
Although Prof. Gyampo was not found culpable of engaging in sex for
grades, he was found guilty of having misconducted himself as a
lecturer.
The committee described his actions as shown in the video as
“Unacceptable and inappropriate behaviour” and has warned him to be of
good behaviour in future.
The committee also recommended that the University should take steps to
tackle sexual harassment issues by training members of the University
community on what constitutes harassment.
Dr Butakor a lecturer at the College of Education who was also seen in
the video allegedly having inappropriate with the “student” by asking to
be her “side boy” has also been cleared.
Both Professor Gyampo and Dr Butakor have been on interdiction since October 2019.
